After the holidays, family meals, presents, if you are one of those “anti-Christmas” people and have taken a short break, after several kilos of polvorones and official dinners or dinners with friends, after unforeseen events, Secret Santa, meetings to have a few “cañas”, after shopping in the sales, gifts taking advantage of the sales, dinner here, grapes there …. After all these expenses, we suggest some options for you to face the January cost, so that the rest of the month is not all about watching series on the sofa at home in order not to spend.
We’ve looked at alternative plans for Barcelona, so that we can look after our pockets while having a good time.
Free Concert, La Quinta de Maher
It doesn’t happen every day to be able to listen live to a work like Gustav Mahler’s ‘Fifth Symphony’ for free. This is one of the most attractive proposals offered these days by the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya through its cycle of Great Ensembles. Diego Naser will be conducting the orchestra of students and teachers, to perform a work that always represents a great challenge for any orchestra.
Festival Artistic Cycle
This year’s edition of Els Vespres d’Hivern features an exquisite cycle of emerging artists, performing every Friday from 26 January to the end of February, with free admission and advance booking. The line-up for this latest edition includes the Mallorcan Júlia Colom, the multidisciplinary artist Alvaro Sola, the Lisbon duo Golden Slumbers and the artist couple Grauwi and Marta Cascales, who will be performing at the Paraninfo of the historic building of the University of Barcelona from 3 to 24 February. And all this without paying a single euro.
More free music at the Auditori de Barcelona
The Sala Oriol Martorell at the Auditori de Barcelona is hosting a marathon of free concerts, featuring young talents. These one-hour concerts will take place between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. and will feature, in this order, the Cor Jove Nacional de Catalunya, Veus-Cor Infantil dels Amics de la Unió, The Ministers of Pastime, Delis Duo, Aurora Peña, Sandro Gegechkori, Ferran Albrich and Vanessa Porter.
Organ Cycle in the Cathedral
Every third Wednesday of the month, between October and May, Barcelona Cathedral hosts an interesting series of concerts featuring outstanding Spanish and foreign organists. This is the case of the Chilean Catalina Vicens, an organist specialising in medieval and Renaissance organetto. In this recital she will alternate pieces played on the cathedral’s great organ with pieces played on one of the portative organs in her collection. Free admission and voluntary contribution.
Walk through Park Güell and other historical monuments
I know it may be a cliché, but more than once we don’t visit tourist sites in our own city because we hate to pay, but did you know that there is a way to get in for free?
The Gaudir Més virtual register is a Barcelona City Council initiative through which its members receive information about the city, and can benefit from discounts and other advantages, including a free daily ticket to Park Güell. For more information on how to register, visit the Gaudir Més website.
