What is YouTube Shorts?

YouTube Shorts is Google’s bid to compete with Instagram Reels and TikTok, both of which have been created to compete with TikTok, given it’s great reception by the public and the great success it has had worldwide in terms of both downloads and publications.

The app was launched on 14 September 2020. As opposed to TikTok, but like Reels, YouTube Shorts is integrated within the main YouTube app and can be chosen just like uploading a video and streaming live.

Initially, videos were only up to 15 seconds long, as was the case with TikTok. However, it has evolved and now you can create videos up to one minute long.

To use YouTube Shorts you have to open the original YouTube application and press the Create (+) button, located in the middle of the bottom menu. The Create Short option will appear in the drop-down menu.

If you are familiar with TikTok or Reels you will not find it difficult to use this new tool. The tools it features are video speed controls, timer and countdown for hands-free recording. In addition, you can add music from your own library, and a function to string together multiple clips and watch them back-to-back.

What do you think, will YouTube Shorts beat TikTok or Reels to the market?
