The most surprising professions related to tourism

There is a belief that those who study a Tourism Degree will end up working in a hotel reception, or at most in a travel agency; Nothing is further from reality.

The most demanded professions in the sector are:

  • Director of tourism companies, hotels, cruises…
  • Responsible for organizing events
  • Tourism marketing
  • Creation and design of tourism products
  • Tourist consultant
  • Guide

But there are also other professions that are no less important, but very surprising, here are some:

Bed heater

Some British hotels, especially in the London and Manchester areas, offer their guests a bed warmer service, which is excellent for the coldest. When outside temperatures drop below freezing and snow falls heavily from the sky, all we want to do is crawl into bed and snuggle up with a duvet. However, how can we avoid the trauma of rubbing cold sheets when we throw ourselves on the mattress? Would you call reception to request this service?

Surf teacher… for dogs

Teaching tourists the art of surfing is already an interesting profession. From the interesting we go to the extravagant, but not for that reason little demanded. In San Diego – obviously, in sunny California – the dog surfing course was invented, in English “Dog Surfing Coach”, in which an instructor has the mission of teaching dogs to tame the ocean waves. Crazy? Yes, without a doubt. But they do not stop raining requests from their owners, lovers of the waves, to share leisure with their pets.

Guard a desert island

Would you dare to live on a desert island? Many governments hire a person in charge of maintenance and surveillance of remote islands, care of their beaches, surveillance of their atolls, a lighthouse maintainer, for example, but also a tour operator for the visitors who come to it. Control the fauna and take care of nature, keeping everything in order. The Australian Government is currently seeking candidates willing to work full-time on the many Pacific Islands off the coast of the country.

Water slide tester

Sebastián Smith was the first person hired by a travel agency to make a ranking of water slides and water parks. His role is to assess the quality of these facilities, since they attract a large number of tourists. He has to check the speed, momentum, amount of water, and other factors that fun on a water slide depends on. All in exchange for 20,000 pounds a year plus paid travel and living expenses and being able to enjoy the least monotonous job in the world.

We have only named the most unusual professions, but the list of exits to the world of work derived from Tourism is long and exciting, to mention others that we do not want to leave out, we have roller coaster tester, noodle taster, risk activities tester… among others.

And tell us, what would you like to dedicate yourself?
